Understanding Medicare: A Seminar for Family Caregivers

Paperwork. Just imagine what a relief it could be if your aging relative didn't have to worry about bills, receipts and recordkeeping anymore--especially medical bills and records! Many sons and daughters are offering to take on this responsibility for their aging parents. Sometimes, assistance with financial affairs is all the help an elder really needs.

But then reality sets in. You're used to handling expenses like rent, mortgage payments or utility bills. But as a younger person, you may not know much about Medicare, and Medicare is the primary form of medical insurance for people over 65. Since older people are the biggest users of health care, you may soon find yourself flooded with medical statements you don't quite understand. And if your relative has a health problem, you may be in the dark as to what medical services are supposed to be covered by their insurance.

Broome County Office for Aging Caregiver Services is offering you an opportunity to learn the basics about Medicare, so you can help your elderly relatives. This knowledge can also help you with your own health care planning.

Understanding Medicare: A Seminar for Family Caregivers is being offered on Tuesday, September 12 from 7-9 p.m. at the Vestal Public Library on Vestal Parkway, and Wednesday, September 13 from 1-3 p.m. at the Binghamton Public Library on Court St.
The speakers for both events are Michelle Barrows from Action for Older Persons and Jennifer Lorang from Upstate Medicare.
