Brownfields Redevelopment
A brownfield is any abandoned or underutilized commercial or industrial property where there is real or perceived environmental contamination. Redevelopment of brownfield sites is a priority of the county and the BCPlan, and the Planning Department plays a significant roles in these efforts. Working in partnership with the EMC's Brownfield Committee, the Planning Department has developed a comprehensive database of brownfield sites that is linked with the County's Geographic Information System. Using GIS, the Planning Department is able to map brownfield sites against demographic data, property information, and other environmental and land use data.
An early result of this department's brownfield efforts was to secure a $200,000 US Environmental Protection Agency grant to cover the cost of performing environmental assessments at sites where contamination is suspected. To date, the EPA has approved work at one property and is considering work at another.
